About Us

Sara and Heike with their African family In August 2002, Sara Wrelton went to Ghana as a volunteer working with TPA (Teaching and Projects Abroad) as part of her Development and Overseas Studies degree at the University of East Anglia. While she was in Ghana she lived with a local family run by a lady called Molly Yankey. Molly owns a rice shop and a roadside drinks bar, but is also concerned for the children of the village where she works. She wants to give something back to the community, as so many of the residents are deprived and cannot afford many of the basic amenities that we take for granted.

Molly's dream had been to set up a nursery to give the village children an education and better prospects for their future. While Sara was in Ghana she managed to raise an amount of money from generous donations from friends and family and a start was made on a simple building to house a nursery.

Once Sara arrived back in England she was determined to continue raising money to carry on aiding the nursery, which Molly was funding as much as she could. At this point a friend and fellow Development Studies student, Ed Holloway, as well as another volunteer, Heike Mayer (the nursery namesake), got heavily involved. Together the team has worked hard to set up and run the official charity called Africa's Future, which continues to support the project and hopes to support many others in the future.

As the team are all volunteers, the charity has very low running costs which means that all donations go directly to the project in Ghana. Please support Africa's Future by making a donation now.
